The el salvador national football team is one of the youngest teams in central america.

An early return is auspicious: Henriks and Perez were hired to manage the youth team and take charge of the senior team in April after the worrying results of the previous World Cup qualifying round led to a change of coaches. Building on a base of young players and recruits, El Salvador reached the knockout stages of this summer's main regional tournament Gold Cup, even briefly spooking Mexico before being knocked out in the quarterfinals.

Salvadoran football originated in a stadium called "Campo Marte" in the city of Santa Ana. The first recorded match was between the players of Santa Ana and San Salvador on July 16, 1899. Both teams have several foreign players from England who have been credited with bringing football to El Salvador. The home team won 2-0.

Scorers of that game are as follows: Mario Montoya 16' (0–1), Antonio Jasso 27' (1–1), Mario Montoya 36' (1–2), Ricardo Valencia 37' (1–3), Rafael Gutierrez 64' (2–3). The 1st goal in a World Cup qualifier was scored by Joel Estada on 12 December 1968 against Dutch Guiana.

Alianza are one of the most successful Salvadoran teams. It was the first club in Central America to win the CONCACAF Champions Cup (now the Champions League) and the UNCAF Club Championship. Alianza is also the only team in El Salvador to pull off an “invincible’s season”, taking the domestic title in the 2017 season without a single defeat.
